The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #291: Wanting, Needing, Self-Compassion, and a Thirteenth Hour Reading

This week’s show takes a small passage from The Thirteenth Hour and extrapolates it into an exploration into what it means to want, to need, and what really is compassion to ourselves – needing, wanting, or both?  In this passage, Logan, the main character of The Thirteenth Hour, is having a dream where he talks with a former mentor, Wally, the wizard who originally recruited a reluctant Logan into all the shenanigans that resulted in the story.

Did I not say you’d be great hero someday?”

“Ah, Wally, I …”

“Okay, I get a little carried away sometimes, but look how far you’ve come!  You’re just in a little rut now.”

“You know, I don’t care much about that now.  The quest and all that.  It’s, well, other things that are starting to seem more important.”

“Oh, yes, of course.  I know.  You’re starting to understand.”

“It doesn’t feel like understanding.  I feel more confused than ever.”

“And that is always how one must begin.  Besides, Logan, if I had all the answers, I could call myself a wise man.  Maybe there’s fate, maybe there are gods, maybe there’s just chance, but you know what?  Does it really matter?  For all intents and purposes, your life, your world, your own story, is really what you make of it.  We all start life with the same blank sheets of paper, the same quill, and the same bottle of ink.  Our hand is guided to the pen, then to the inkwell, and then the first page.  That’s where we all start.  But how we write, and what we write, is largely up to ourselves.  Your world, Logan, can be whatever you want it to be.  The things around you, well, they’re just things.  But how you see them, that’s what you can change.  Now, what is it that you really want?”

I thought for awhile. “No one’s really asked me that before.”

“Well, I’m asking you now.”

“I think I’m going to have to get back to you on that.”

“Well, you work on that.  Just remember, there’s a difference between wanting and needing, and it’s okay to want things.  See, Logan, the things you want don’t always have to be real to be true.  You can paint the canvas of your life in whatever colors you choose … if only you wish it so …”

And sometimes, wanting and needing can result in the same action.  But at other times, what we really need is exactly opposite of what we want.  For example, take the song “Many Miles,” that debuted last week.  It’s a song about one of the main characters of the next Thirteenth Hour book, Aurora, as she struggles to make decisions.  In other words, it’s about wanting vs. needing!  She does not want to leave a home she has built with her husband, a life she has created for herself that is comfortable and safe from the chaos of the world.  But there is a small but growing part of herself that feels unfulfilled and a bit empty, like something is missing, given the lack of knowledge she has about her family and the early (unknown) parts of her life.  What she actually needs is to shake up the status quo to learn that information in order to feel fulfilled enough to really appreciate what she has created.  So – the compassionate choice – leaving – is actually the more painful one.  But it’s the one she needs in order to move forward in life, even though she doesn’t want to.  Complicated, isn’t it?  🙂  But, so often, our lives are.  That’s encapsulated in the song (which is why it took son long to finally get right) and also in this episode.

This week’s show piggybacks off last week’s episode and the Patreon exclusive episode that came out last week.  We’re making the slow, meditative Thirteenth Hour theme that was playing in the background of last week’s episode and then creating a visual for it in Adobe Premiere.  I always thought that cloudscape scenes were peaceful and naturally meditative, so I’m using that a stock footage first person cloudscape as a background as well as some pixelart animations of Logan that I created years ago.

The Thirteenth Hour Podcast #289: Knowing Yourself, Ukemi, Relaxing into Existential Angst, and Deep Breathing with A Thirteenth Hour Reading

This week’s episode comes at a time of increasing national and global anxiety about the future, and as inhabitants on this rock orbiting a star on the edge of the Milky Way, we’re subject to the milieu of the environment, and unfortunately, there’s a lot of angst in the soup.  And as anyone who’s ever had a muscle cramp can attest, the way around a cramp is not with more tension, it’s relaxing into it – leaning in to the pain.  In this episode, I talk about the concept of the “receiving body” (ukemi in Japanese, though usually translated as “breakfall”).  If we meet the impact of a blow or a fall head on, we play a game of structural strength with the opposing force.  When you play that game with the ground, you always lose (unless you are Chuck Norris, of course).  Just as a good training partner (uke, a.k.a. “receiver”) is able to flow with an attacker and ride off (or simulate) the impact of an attack so his partner can learn how the body moves and responds, doing a good ukemi means never making a dead landing.  It means rolling with the force of the fall as best you can.  The ability to relax the body in such situations is counter-intuitive, since the natural instinct is to brace for impact, but remember, the ground always wins in a game of strength. 

Ukemi is not limited to the physical, though.  We are always receiving bodies of the slings and arrows that life throws at us.  There, too, the ability to relax is counter-intuitive.  Thankfully, as with breakfalls, the ability to relax into potential pain can be taught and practiced.  We all have the ability within ourselves.  In this episode, I talk about one of the simplest (though I didn’t say easiest), most natural (again, natural does not mean intuitive) things we all know how to do – breathing.  It does take a bit of practice to do it in a way that slows things down to a more manageable pace, but the good news is that once you know how to do it, you can practice deep, slow breathing almost anywhere, anytime, and it doesn’t have to be during a time of official “meditation” (I did it the other day in a dentist’s chair).  

If the music playing during the breathing segment sounds familiar, it’s because it’s similar to the intro podcast music.  It’s a slow reworking of The Thirteenth Hour theme.  For Patreon supporters, watch for an exclusive podcast episode on it sometimes this week as well as a longer stretch to accompany the breathing exercise.  I’ll make an accompanying video soon as well.

This week, I’ve finally come to the point of having a rough initial draft of “Many Miles” that I started a long time ago.  It will play at the end of the episode.  While still a work in progress, it’s definitely farther along than last week.  It’s been a tedious process indeed to get it to this point.

I’ve also included the second part of working on a long lost instrumental melody that would later become the folk ballad “Dragons’ Eyes” in The Thirteenth Hour.  This is a tune that I would mess around with as a kid and in college, where there were pianos all over.  I never had a name for it but wrote the first few verses of the song in the novel to its melody.  I figured reworking to make a short fill for Empty Hands, which has a little scene referencing the song, would be a nice way to come full circle.  This week, I’m doing it to a slow (~70 bpm) beat.

This week, I’m continuing to work on the vocal part of a track called “Many Miles” that I started a long time ago … I’m a little farther along than last week, but it’s still slow going.  Here’s the first part.  There’s still some parts in the middle that don’t quite sound right with the timing, so I’ll keep working …

This week, I’m continuing to work on the vocal part of a track called “Many Miles” that I started a long time ago … and this week, I’m testing out playing the backing chords in arpeggiated form and with a slow backing beat.  The song has gone through a number of iterations, like an acoustic version, a dance beat version (a few bits included here), and the one now, which I think will be a slower synth version.   Over the course of this week, I’ll see if I can get it to the point of being recordable (i.e. I have to practice it).
